Flocean One: One Million Liters of Drinking Water Per Day

Flocean One is producing one million liters of drinking water per day from seawater more than 500 meters below the surface. The system has operated at full capacity with zero disruptions since entering 24/7 operation earlier this month.

Less than a month after its official opening in Mongstad, Norway, the system has entered continuous commercial operation. The plant is monitored remotely from Flocean's offices, 330 kilometers away, where engineers track performance in real time.


Officially open


On June 30, Flocean welcomed partners, customers, investors, and local officials to Mongstad. Norway to officially open Flocean One.

The ceremony was attended by Alver Municipality Mayor Sara Hamre Sekkingstad, who sampled drinking water produced directly by the system. Drawn from more than 500 meters below the surface, the water meets WHO drinking water standards and is produced without the extensive pre-treatment required by conventional desalination systems.


The opening marked the culmination of years of engineering, testing, and collaboration. It also marked the beginning of a new phase: operating a commercial-scale subsea desalination plant every day.

With commissioning complete, the focus now shifts to long-term operations.

The plant is monitored remotely from Flocean's offices, 330 kilometers away, where engineers track performance in real time.


One of the clearest indicators of how well Flocean One is performing is the stability of its intake conditions. The intake pressure graph has remained remarkably steady over weeks of continuous operation. The small pulsations visible in the data are caused by the one-meter tidal difference, which changes the intake pressure by just 0.1 bar from peak to valley.


The plant is already producing one million liters of freshwater every day while final infrastructure is completed to connect the system to the municipal water network. In the coming months, Flocean will continue operating the system, collecting operational data, and demonstrating the reliability, efficiency, and environmental performance of commercial-scale subsea desalination.
